This is intriguing. We need more information to understand better what
is causing this to happen on your system.

First, does this occur with all and every MP3 and XLS file on your
system?

Second, does it occur with other files?

Third, what does the output of the 'file' command tell you when run on
one of these files? For instance, if the file was named star.xls, you
would run:

   file star.xls

and tell me what the output is.

Finally, what version of Ubuntu are you using?
