I completely purged 2.10.2 and moved away all gthumb directories from ~/.gnome2 and ~/.gconf/apps, then reinstalled gthumb, but nothing changed.
I restored the gthumb directories in ~/.gnome2 and ~/.gconf/apps and downgraded to 2.7.9 and the thumbnails reappeared.
