The one "legitimate" reason for wireframe mode I'm aware of is that some apps (proprietary/in-house apps, mostly) do not compress configure events, which means opaque resize can hose them mightily. There's supposed value for thin clients but I haven't seen numbers. I just threw in the "don't animate minimization" thing to stop people whining. reduced_resources mode is buggy and does not work all that well, though Ray fixed the worst of it.
