MS also do parallel installs in order to provide new functionality without
breaking old applications. For instance, the MSVC++ DLLs.

Going off topic: As someone who has wasted countless weeks creating
installations for Windows applications, I believe that the idea of
backwards compatability (or even compatibility between various installs of
the supposedly same versions of Windows) is a myth. There are problems and
people work around them. People who are tied to Windows don't bother much
complaining about it because they know nobody's listening.
