The "random set of letters", as you said, represents the huge african baobab tree [1], very common in all ancient literature. As the program shows the directory tree of a disk, it was very straight to use the baobab tree as a symbol to that. When I saw for the first time the word "ubuntu", I was thinking at a random set of letters, then I have documented myself.
