Just as a point of information - the last time this discussion was had, 
there was a *lot* of support for a *lot* of different VCSs. I think Mr 
Hallendal summarised the consensus quite well:

"But having Subversion instead of CVS is a lowrisk/high-gain transition 
that we can do today and it makes a lot of sense doing so." [1]

So while anyone arguing "Stop the SVN transition now, go to GIT instead" 
is clearly on crack, my impression is that the community is in favour of 
at least investigating VCS alternatives.
