Hi, a lot of GNOME modules can have their functionality extended by third party code, through extensions or plugins. The interface to enable and disable them is different on most applications.
For example, Evolution has an Edit -> Plugins window, Gedit uses a tab in the preferences dialog and Epiphany uses the Tools -> Extensions menu. There are several other modules as well as third party applications. The Evolution method has been adopted by some third party applications, and seems to be the most common.
