Gecko and GNOME-VFS (or the new GVFS) need to be integrated. All GVFS transfers should be daemonized, IMO.
That way, long local transfers from disk to disk, or CD to disk, or NFS to SFTP, or HTTP to disk, will be handled the same way. And this would be teh sex. There are some challenges here, however, in that (from what I can tell) the design of GVFS doesn't lend itself to, i.e. POST requests. While I agree that there should be some sort of API to just identify a file by URI and read it or its metadata, some kind of protocol underneath should be exposed to allow more complicated things, like POST requests in a web browser.
