I just saw that the support for this is now in the latest gnome-session and 
bug-buddy :)

Does it mean that modules shipped as part of GNOME 2.20 that only use 
gnome_program_init()
for hooking into bug-buddy can now replace it with gtk_init() ? One such app is 
gnome-screensaver,
