A similar idea which I think I mentionned to Brian is to expose the
path to the desktop file in an env var so that apps can look up
.desktop file backed data; for example in the env:
SESSION_DESKTOP_FILE=/usr/local/share/gdm/online.desktop
and in the .desktop file, any desktop or app specific data, e.g.:
X-DBus-Services-Path: /usr/local/share/dbus/services
