IMHO Helge Bahmann got it right: he designed an AUDIO extension for X Window: http://www.chaoticmind.net/~hcb/murx/xaudio Being in the X server, you gain network transparency and A/V sync. There's no reason PA or gstreamer couldn't have a sink for that.
