I had to double-check that I hadn't written this post myself. Vuntz, you are a glimmer of sanity in this messy world.
Our HIG says that we should be using descriptive names for our MENUS, then Vuntz and the FDO mob came along and standardised application definitions (Desktop Entry), and we ended up bungling the Name field into the menu entry label. But we still have a problem. For some applications it will be sensible to have: Name=GEdit GenericName=Text Editor But for others, it may be: Name=GNOME Text Editor GenericName=Text Editor Hence, we can't just concatenate the two to make our menu label noun-phrase. Personally, I would be hacking an option to disable the generic name anyway so I would never see anything other than $Name, but I am curious to hear what other people might suggest for those who wish to include generic names.
