There was actually a discussion only a few days ago as well for
openSUSE:

The consens was that it's a bit late in the schedule; but then, at that
point, we did not have a pressing argument.

Shoot... that was misinterpreted by me... 'porting' did not imply (to
me) that old support is gone; so it was assumed to co-exist and know
which of the two to use

Indeed.. breaking at linking is so much easier to spot... but that means
we DO have stuff in already that relies on it.
