The maintainers of gnome-shell are interested in supporting this functionality in the core of gnome-shell (not in an extension), but they'd need someone (or likely more than one person) that understands the various calendars to do the work. Depending on how the calendars are used in various regions, we might also need to have discussions with designers to see how the calendar switching would work.
