I wouldn't say that GDM is "tied" to GNOME.  GDM doesn't use
much of the GNOME stack aside from GTK and libgnomecanvas.
Some gdm-related GUI programs (such as gdmsetup) use libglade
as well, but libglade isn't used by the actual login programs.
In the real world many KDE users use GDM and many KDM users use KDE.
KDM and GDM have different features, so people who want particular
features pick the login program they like.

I believe you can, if you want, use XDM on Solaris.  It doesn't
support some features that would be needed for it to be a default
login program.  Features like Solaris audit, logindevperm,
Sun Ray support, etc.  As long as you don't need such features,
then it should be possible to get XDM working.
