Interesting, because my motherboard also has SATA (nforce4). But as I said, this sluggishness has vanished since I have been using zfs root. I doubt that zfs root is able to overplay the missing native SATA support altho I would think the missing native SATA support could be respoinsible for a lack of speed - don't have any benchmarks tho.
