Hmm.., actually I don't think it's a better suggestion.
/tmp exhausts the physical memory and /var/tmp is for the disk swap.

I think the problem is that the gvfs directory name is renamed.
E.g. Firefox always has the one preference dir 
$HOME/.mozilla/firefox/$RANDOM.default. $RANDOM is the random values.
