OpenSolaris is simply Solaris open-sourced for all the world to see
and play with. Plain and simple. Similar to Linux, there can be many
variations on packaging which address different needs. Solaris itself
has traditionally been an "all in one" package without
nickle-and-diming the customer for features, or charging 10X more for
a "server" version as other OSs do. This means that the 512-core
server gets the same OS install as a single-CPU laptop. What happens
to work for a single-CPU laptop can not be allowed to compromise the
512-core server install. Everything must be considered.
