If the graphics driver doesn't support hardware acceleration, then OpenGL
really suffers.  You might consider getting a graphics card with better
support.  If it makes you feel better, it seems many people have problems
with GeForce FX cards being slow.

Some users have reported that turning off transparency features in Compiz
