It's mostly used for SMB, FTP, WebDav, and other gnome-vfs remote servers - see http://www.gnome.org/learn/users-guide/2.14/gosnautilus-515.html for more details. If you want it off, change the gconf key at /apps/nautilus/desktop/network_icon_visible to false. -- James Andrewartha
