Hi Peter,
To remove the IM status window attached in each application,
invoke iiim-properties from command line and
uncheck "Display Input Method Status" check box
or
select "Desktop Default" or "Gnome Panel" at Placement:
choice.
and then, press "OK"or "Apply" button.
Though default setting is "Desktop Default" (that is "Gnome Panel"
in JDS, "Attached Window Frame" in CDE), your current setting seems
to be "Attached Window Frame" somehow.
If this doesn't work, could you try to remove
$HOME/.gconf/desktop/input_methods/%gconf.xml file and re-login?
