The relevant part of the .desktop file specification is at http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s05.html which says to look at the menu specification, which has a list of registered categories at http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apa.html and you can specify your own categories by prefixing them with "X-" http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/ar01s03.html -- James Andrewartha
