Gary, To simply answer your question is that the audio on a webcam dev hasn't been supported yet in snv and Ekiga. Let me try to explain it as clearly as possible. The usb audio driver(I mean the audio part) for most of webcam hasn't been integrated into snv. The usb driver team has their own concern about the mess that is caused by the driver integration,
1. The current audio framework in solaris would take the latest plugin audio dev(including usb audio dev) as the default audio dev, which is "/dev/audio" pointing to. Note that "/dev/audio" contains play and record dev. It would be impossible to run any other application(like realplay) using the on-board sound card after plugin a webcam with microphone since the node of "/dev/audio" hardcoded in most of the applications now points to a audio dev on webcam without play function. 2. The development of OSS driver in solaris is ongoing. It will bring something new into SADA framework. All the issues related to audio/usb audio/oss/applications should be resolved by general consensus.
