Under ~/.mozilla, a couple of directories down, for the profile in use, 
there is a file named 'lock' which is a symbolic link pointing to IP 
address + process id.  It will be removed if firefox exits cleanly (gets 
a chance to perform functions registered atexit()).  If it does not get 
removed, as when the machine crashes/panics/loses power, you need to 
manually remove it ... which you did, but overkill, destroyed bookmarks 
and so forth.
