Thanks for the build notes - I'm not sure I can help you on quite a few
of them, although for some of them we do seem to have the same patches
in the JDS sources.

So the menu entries are stored in $(sysconfdir)/xdg/menus, as .xml
files. Then the stuff that fills them is in $(datadir)/applications,
as .desktop files.

Sounds like you probably need to be setting the XDG_DATA_DIRS
environmental variable to point to your stuff in /opt/gnome2, although
I'm not sure why it didn't pick up the JDS stuff.
