Bernd,

Just curios, what window manager are you running ? Compiz or metacity ?

Is the window manager still running ? e.g. for thunderbird window can you 
select 
the title bar (via left click and hold down mouse) and drag window around 
desktop ?

If not sounds like your window manager has died and needs to be restarted, 
check 
$HOME for a core file aswell.
