All,

I'm running OpenSolaris 2009.06 on an Ultra40 and a type 7 Unix keyboard
and gnome. AFAICT, I'm up-to-date on the OS, 'pkg image-update' tells me
"no updates available". my authority is http://ipkg.sfbay/dev/

I recently(*) noticed that the numeric keypad - with or without numlock -
doesn't cause any action/printing of characters, with these exceptions:

- NumLock turns the NumLock indicator on and off
- Enter causes a newline in a terminal (ie "normal operation", AFAICT)
- the "+" button causes what I'd call the "select to here" behaviour, here
being the mouse cursor (seen in xterm and gvim). In thunderbird, the text
cursor just moves to where the mouse currently "sits". When I move the
mouse to a different window, this window is selected.

Alan Coopersmith suggested I try this with xev, which I did; it seems that
where the regular keys produce KeyPress events immediately followed by a
KeyRelease event, I only see KeyRelease events for the keys that are not
working; *sometimes* these are preceeded by ButtonPress events.

I can provide the xev output files if needed (collected using "xev > file
2>&1").

TIA for pointers, hints, RTFMs, etc
Michael

*) I think this started happening after I rebooted the most recent
opensolaris bits last Sunday after the power outage in Menlo Park; I'd
image-updated a few days previously and was waiting for a good time to
reboot...
