Thanks for replying.

I worked it out.
If you connect to the svga port in the 20.1" Sun lcd screen you get
a max 1024x768 (I guess this is not reading EDID - whatever that is)
but if you connect to the dvi port you get the full resolution  
capability
of the monitor; 1600x2000 - seems to make sense but difficult to
troubleshoot.
