Hi Sam,
if you want to have your system backed up, you either
need to roll your own ufsdump-based scripts, or make
use of open source backup software such as Amanda, or
purchase commercial backup software.
Editing st.conf is *not* going to backup your system.
Your DDS4 tape drive should be detected automatically
by OpenSolaris, too.
