Brian, This had been done on several fronts about the migration of Xsun to Xorg. I looked into this back during Xorg 6.8.2 (with help from Alan C.) with the migration of non-Sun drivers. Martin Bochnig had much success in porting the Sun video drivers.
Of course, this is X centric but Xorg on Sparc is only part of the problem. We need a FULL implementation of Xorg for development purposes (SDK/DDK). Meaning, I can port KDE 3.5.5 or GNOME 2.16.1 to the OpenSolaris SXCR distros and get all the Xorg bells and whistles. This means: 1. A FULL Xorg 7.1/7.2 implementation with all the headers and libs needed for real porting projects. 2. SPARC 2D/3D Video drivers for currently sold and some legacy Sun SPARC graphic solutions (within reason and can be closed source). This sounds reasonable in that it could also be backported to Solaris 10.... Ken Mays EarthLink, Inc. -----------------------------------------------> Would also be nice if we could get all the Sparc Xserver drivers ported to Xorg so we could do away with Xsun support on Sparc, though this is wishing too much I'm sure. I think Sun is having a hard time resourcing this project and it seems to keep be given a low priority. Still, long-term, dropping support for Xsun would save us a lot of time and help our team focus more on the latest technologies. Might also be nice to EOL CDE and Xsun at the same time since they have some odd interdependencies. So since virtual terminals is going in soon, perhaps we could find more people interested in helping the Xsun->Xorg Sparc migration. I'd talk to Alan dot Coopersmith at sun dot com if you think you can help here. -Brian C. This message posted from opensolaris.org
