I think building vanilla GNOME is tricky regardless of what build system you use - whether that's GARNOME or jhbuild. We have a number of patches to build with the Forte compiler that haven't gone upstream, and there's a wad of various environmental variables, and tools dependencies [GNU tools mostly] that are useful. I'd recommend looking at downloading the JDS CBE and building that installing that into your prefix, and then trying again. While this doesn't directly help you, we're planning on providing the latest and greatest GNOME bits when they are available after a milestone release [ie. not CVS, but snapshot milestone tarball].
