I think building vanilla GNOME is tricky regardless of what build system
you use - whether that's GARNOME or jhbuild. We have a number of patches
to build with the Forte compiler that haven't gone upstream, and there's
a wad of various environmental variables, and tools dependencies [GNU
tools mostly] that are useful. I'd recommend looking at downloading the
JDS CBE and building that installing that into your prefix, and then
trying again.

While this doesn't directly help you, we're planning on providing the
latest and greatest GNOME bits when they are available after a milestone
release [ie. not CVS, but snapshot milestone tarball]. In particular
we're going to be branching the JDS sources pretty soon, in preparation
for GNOME 2.15.x
