Here's something else that's weird about audioplay: An ultra5 running Solaris Express b51a will play the Nagios sounds, no complaints. jritorto at jritorto-solaris:~> audioplay Software/gjallarhorn-nagios/nagios-2.3.1/html/media/critical.wav jritorto at jritorto-solaris:~> ...but a pc running Solaris Express b51 and connected via Sun Ray will not: jritorto at alabaster:~> audioplay Software/gjallarhorn-nagios/nagios-2.3.1/html/media/critical.wav audioplay: Software/gjallarhorn-nagios/nagios-2.3.1/html/media/critical.wav encoding not available: mono 8.000000-bit (unknown encoding?) @ 11.025kHz jritorto at alabaster:~> As root on the pc, no problem: # audioplay ~jritorto/Software/gjallarhorn-nagios/nagios-2.3.1/html/media/critical.wav # > > According to > http://www.mp3licensing.com/licensees/index.asp, Sun > has an MP3 > license (although I have no idea of just what it > covers). > > Even if audioplay could be modified to support MP3 > WAV files, it may well be > impossible for the MP3 decoder to be open source. > (OTOH > tp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 says the patent holder > aren't enforcing against > free decoders, and I think I see an mp3 input plugin > for the SFW xmms. > > So could audioplay be enhanced for MP3 (and any other > common non-proprietary > WAV encodings not already supported) or not? > > Some sort of proper plugin (with a small GUI) would Yikes, having a gui would be a major dealbreaker for me. The embed has to just play without interaction like it does on all other platforms. This is for Nagios alerts on a keyboardless workstation used as a heads up display in a NOC. > be nice, too.
