I'm running these desktop bits (including firefox):

http://dlc.sun.com/osol/jds/downloads/current/

and have had no problems w/ crashes running Solaris nv 37.

As regards to plug-ins, I use java and flash from
macromedia.com....

I don't have a pdf plugin, but evince (part of the
new desktop) works very well indeed.
