I can read the screen in 1024x768 or higher resolution but my mom feels
it's hard to read even in 640x480. So what's the "best fit"? :-)

Another problem is that seems there's no GUI to change date/time. I
seldom change the time so can't remember the format and every time I
have to run "man date" at first. It's not necessary to be in the desktop
context menu but should be somewhere else that is easy to be found.

My 2 cents.
