For the record. I finished restoring my gnome session. The way I did
it was:

1) Create a new user and build up the whole gui session as my old gui
session
2) Copied over the directories:
.compiz, .config, .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome2, .gnome2_private, and
.nautilus
to a new directory called "gnome_session_backup" (not in my home
directory)
3) Replaced all the above files in step 2 to my home directory.

Now every thing is working great. Even other problems I had but didn't
mention about (compiz would never start, I had to manually start it by
adding an entry to my .profile) is cured. Now I have a backup of my
session if something in the future fails. I also must note, the one
file that made the difference was ".config". Most of the remainder
files just backed up the session.
