Further detail.
I ran /usr/bin/gnome-cleanup without any success. I also found that trying to
run applications like Firefox and Thunderbird resulted in segmentation faults.
I captured the output of trying to start evince with truss and have include
some of it below. Running evince shows what I also saw trying to run other
