This problem seems to have been caused by another bug (and probably is 
unrelated to ibus):

After the workaround, I am now able to use the Chewing input engine.  Pinyin 
(for S-Chinese)  and Anthy
(for Japanese) engines are also working OK.

I am running OpenSolaris snv_129 (image-updated from snv_111).

The following are some examples using the ibus:

?????(T-Chinese, Chewing)
????   (S-Chinese, PinYin)
???  ?????(Japanese, anthy)
