This release doesn't work at all for me. I'm running Oracle Solaris
11 Express snv_151a X86, and have been upgrading firefox release by
release from 4.0b2 to 4.0b8. With 4.0b9 it was crashing often until
I removed the plugins directory (which I've been taking with me
release by release). It will now run, but I lose all my history and
bookmarks, forward and back arrows are greyed out, and the Bookmarks
and History menus empty. It moves my places.sqllite to
places.sqllite-corrupt, and recreates an empty one. I've recovered
my firefox directory from backups, but it's repeatable with no
plugins and no crashes. I occasionally get a red warning bar saying
the data is in use by another process.
I recommend you to backup your bookmarks to a json file or html file,
create a clean Firefox profile and restore your bookmarks.
Thanks. I guess this will also trash all my saved passwords,
preferences, etc., as well, though.
I've restored my b8 copy, and tried it anyway, having taken a backup of
everything this time. Starting with no profile (I deleted
~/.mozilla/firefox), I get
"The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of
Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security
software can cause this problem."
Interestingly, despite this being a completely new directory, I still
get a "places.sqlite.corrupt" file created. Of course, trying to
recover the boomarks from the backup just gives "Unable to process the
backup file." I also tried following the information in the "Learn
More" section - renaming the places.sqllite file. Same result.
I've tried following the "Back and forward or other toolbar items are
missing" link - another symptom (well, they're not missing, just greyed
out and non-functional), but there doesn't seem to be anything
appropriate there.
Is there anything else I can do to help track this problem down ? I'd
like to help fix this problem. Note that this machine is running Oracle
Solaris 11 Express snv_151a X86, the same upgrade works fine on my
laptop running OpenIndiana 148 at home. There are, no doubt, other
differences between the two machines (like this machine has nVidia
graphics, my laptop has ATI). Any thoughts ? Am I the only one having
issues ?
I've had to go back to 4.0b2 (the last time I downloaded the entire
tar file and extracted, rather than using the automatic update). The
update will take me to b3, but no further :-( So my attempt to
upgrade from b8 to b9 has taken me back to b3 for now.
A trick is required for autoupdate from Firefox 4.0b3 to Firefox 4.0b4.
Go to about:config, enter "app.update.certs.1.commonName",
change the value from "*.mozilla.org" to "aus2-community.mozilla.org".
Thanks for this. I have got my b8 version back and working.
Cheers,
Rob
