Ok, With latest updates, finally I became able to switch laptop screen off. And
I experience following:
Firstly: my hardware:
HP ProBook 4520s laptop. Intel Core i3, IntelHD graphics card, External monitor
- Samsung SyncMaster 2243nw
Software:
Ubuntu 11.04. Up to date as per 17-Aug-2011

The problem sequence:
0. Initially I have both monitors (laptop and external) enabled and working
nicely side by side (no mirroring) with full resolution.
1. I go System->Preferences->Monitors and turn off laptop monitor. Click apply.
Laptop screen goes blank and I have external monitor working alone perfectly
with full resolution.
2. I close the lid of the laptop. HERE THE PROBLEM STARTS! What happens: Ubuntu
switches both monitors and puts them into mirror mode. External monitor's
resolution screwed. What one would expect: If a laptop screen is switched off
in corresponding dialog, closing the laptop lid should not affect the settings
and the external monitor.
3. I switch off laptop monitor and fix resolution for external monitor in the
dialog. Click apply and all goes well again.
4. I open up the laptop lid and same happens: monitors are put in morror mode
and resolutions screwed.
5. Close the lid again. Mirroring is switched off by itself and both monitors
are on, even though laptop monitor supposed to be off (lid is closed) and I can
see part of my desktop on my external monitor (it had it's resolution right at
least).

Does Ubuntu wrongly identifies the position of the laptop lid???

As well I have a problem related to this (I think). When I turn on the
laptop and close the lid while it is still running BIOS, The login
screen appears only on laptop screen which is closed and on external one
I can see only background theme. Please let me know if I should report
this as a separate bug.

Title:
laptop close lid event is being handled wrongly

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I'm using a laptop with external monitor and I have a problem with "Close
Lid" event. I have external monitor running and laptop screen off in monitor
settings in gnome. So, usually I press power button on laptop and close the lid
while BIOS is being loaded, my eternal monitor switches on and everything is
alright. Then, if for some reason I open the lid of laptop, Everything is still
ok - I have my external monitor running, and laptop screen off. Now, when I
close the lid of my laptop, the external monitor is being switched off, which
is not the action user expects having settings I have described above.
Closing and opening the lid with only external monitor enabled should not
affect this monitor.
