One thing I just discovered - I Compacted my INBOX and this has had a marked improvement. I have noticed that Thunderbird is still downloading each messaging on a message-by-message basis though - I have marked my INBOX as an Offline folder, so shouldn't it download all messages when new mail comes instead of just downloading the headers?

I used to use Evolution using the same service and net connection. I have noticed that When I start Thunderbird and new emails are synced, clicking on those emails can often take 4 - 10 seconds to display an email. Likewise selecting individual or group emails and press M to mark as read or S to star them often shows a long lag time to successfully complete the operation. I never had these kinds of lag issues in Evolution, so I suspect there is something going on in Thunderbird, but these delays significantly impact the usability and efficiency of using Thunderbird for email.
