The problem was caused by the Nvidia beta drivers. Before upgrading to 10.10, I had the stable Nvidia drivers installed. When I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, the beta drivers got automatically installed without either asking or warning.
This is still a bug, as the upgrade shouldn't switch to beta drivers without asking, and a distribution should never install such unusable unstable untested beta crap. Only drivers that have been thoroughly tested should be installed by default, anything else should only be installed if the user choses so, especially if it is so tremendously unstable. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/797878 Title: random pieces of graphics displayed all around, display is a mess Status in APT: New Status in “gnome-session” package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: I have no idea in which package the bug may be, as this affects the whole system, but it is absolutely CRITICAL as it makes the whole operating system unusable, This is a regression and started happening after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 Pieces of graphic contents (e.g. a portion of a video from youtube or of some graphics generated by an application) persist after the application is closed, and sometimes are displayed even ON TOP of other windows. After a few minutes of using the system, the display is a total mess. It would be nice to know if there is at least a workaround for cleaning the display without rebooting. I'm under the impression this may be some problem with the display card graphics, as it seems to happen mainly with applications which I think use hardware acceleration, such as Flash Plugin, most video players, and applications using OpenGL. I've noticed that when I boot the computer, an Nvidia screen is shown with the big red word "Beta", which I hadn't seen before upgrading to 10.10. Is it possible to have the stable drivers back?
