I can confirm that it doesn't work, but it also doesn't work in xterm.
I believe that this is a function of bash and not gnome-terminal.   The
webpages I've found say  Control-B moves back one character.  The same
is true for Ctrl-F.    What I have found is that the correct emacs key
to move back and forth a word is Esc-B and Esc-F.   I am going to mark
this invalid and get the webpage fixed.
