this is almost certainly the reason.

  HUD (Dash, Alt + F2) very slow to appear after latest update

Bug description:
  It takes about ~5 seconds on my 4.3ghz i7 to show the HUD after
  clicking the dash icon or pressing alt+f2. This is a new performance
  regression since installing the latest updates.
