Thank you for your bug report, I'm marking the unity part as wontfix, the menu 
itself is being refined over cycles but there are no plan to put something else

  Why is the logout indicator so important?

Bug description:
  Why does the logout/shutdown/reboot indicator have to occupy the top
  right corner? (could be because of the memory leaks ofcourse

  a window list indicator up there? In fact every other indicator
  (sound, messaging?) I use more often, just how often do you have to
  reboot?
