Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running
apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.
I suspect your issue may have been solved by disabling KMS (kernel
modesetting)

Cannot enable desktop effects in Maverick

Bug description:
After performing a clean install of Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10, I
found that I could not enable desktop effects. Desktop effects worked
without problem in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04.
What I expect : I go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual
Effects and select "Normal", and there are normal visual effects. I
can then go on to compiz settings and enable such things as the cube
and magnification.
What happens : I go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual
Effects and select "Normal". A box appears with "Searching for
available drivers". The screen then flashes several times and a
dialog box appears with "Desktop effects could not be enabled".
My system is:
IBM Thinkpad T40 1.3Ghz Centrino. Radeon mobility 7500 with 32MB. 1.25Gb
RAM.
