Logging in while docked - doesn't remember monitor layout

Bug description:
I have configured the system to use the external monitor only while
docked. Thankfully as of Precise it remembers this choice when
docking a running system.
Unfortunately, when I boot up while docked, the greeter is on both
screens, which is fine, but on login the display goes to the laptop
and ignores the monitor.
This may be X rather than Unity...(?)
I know the multi-monitor & docking scenarios are a priority with
Precise. Happy to help debug.
