This bug also affects 12.04 (x86 + x64) version of Ubuntu. I can't find the 
authentication option as I did in Ubuntu 11.04, for example.
The dconf-editor workaround may work (modifying env var as well), but it's not 
satisfying as everybody can read the password.

  There is no proxy authentication option under System Settings ->
  Network -> Network Proxy.  Looks like a Gnome3 upstream bug.
