@burli: yes, it's true that you cannot add a bookmark if there are no bookmarks already. You can only add the first bookmark if you change into the folder that you want to bookmark (don't just select the folder, you have to double-click on it to open it) and then choose the Bookmarks / Add Bookmark menu option (as Sebastien describes in comment #24).

If you try and drag a folder to the very bottom of the bookmarks section immediately after opening a nautilus window, it doesn't get added to the bookmarks. This also prevents newly-created users from ever adding a bookmark. If you drag a folder to the middle of the bookmarks section, it gets added, and at this point you can drag folders to the very bottom of the bookmark section (at least until you close nautilus and reopen it). Choosing 'Add Bookmark' from the often menu does nothing.
