Thank you for your bug report, could you try if that happens with the
gtk greeter? It seems rather due to the unity-greeter than to lightdm
itself there

  lightdm does not start automatically in vmware

Bug description:
  Installed from ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso inside of VMware
  Workstation 8.0.1 using the "easy install". After starting the virtual
  machine, lightdm does not start automatically. After logging in at the
  command line and typing "sudo lightdm", it starts as usual.
