I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have same problem: the network works fine
but network-manager shows that there are no active connections.

Title:
Network Manager shows no active connection

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

When upgrading from edgy to feisty, network-manager was installed
default, and it reports that there is no network connection even
though the network is connected. When I go into Networking and set the
interface to roaming mode, network-manager sees the connection. It's a
bit confusing that the icon shows there, and says that there is no
  connectivity when it actually is.
